Forglass wins contract to repair Saint-Gobain furnaces in Italy and Poland

Polish glass-melting technology supplier Forglass has been commissioned to carry out the hot overcoating of two float glass furnaces for Saint-Gobain Glass, renowned manufacturer of energy-efficient coated glass and insulated glazing.

The repairs will take place at plants in Pisa, Italy and Dąbrowa Górnicza, Poland.

A key factor in Saint-Gobain Glass’s decision to award the hot overcoating contracts to Forglass was the company’s business strategy, which combines engineering prowess and contract fulfilment under one roof.

Hot overcoating of a large float furnace is a particularly demanding type of furnace repair, typically involving more than 100 highly skilled workers and supervisors who have to work in extremely harsh conditions.

During hot overcoating the furnace is maintained around its operating temperature, requiring personnel to wear special protective clothing, gloves, face and head shields and other garments that protect the human body from exposure to extreme heat.

Scheduling this type of work is required to take into account human endurance while working in extreme conditions, therefore teams work in short intervals with breaks to cool off and rest.

Hot overcoating of a large float furnace is planned to minimise glass-to-glass time and detailed planning is essential to determine the exact amount of time to complete each task.

Efficiency and quality of work is paramount as there is no margin for error. By employing highly skilled, technical employees Forglass can successfully undertake very challenging projects, such as hot overcoating.

Having successfully navigated the difficult 2020 lockdown period, Forglass’ expertise is now paying dividends with client contracts in France, Germany, Norway, The Netherlands and the UK.
