Float furnace powered by hydrogen in world first

Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, part of the NSG group, has successfully manufactured architectural glass at its St Helens facility using hydrogen power in a world-first trial.

A key step in the manufacturer’s plans to decarbonise and a pathway to using hydrogen to power all production at the site

The aim of the trial was to demonstrate that the furnace, in which the raw ingredients of the glass are heated to around 1,600°C, could run safely at full production without impacting product quality.

Strong first half sales at Vetropack

Vetropack Group increased net sales from goods and services by 23.3% to CHF 399.2 million with the new glassworks in Moldova adding to the growth.

With European consumers being able to meet in the wider world again, increasing demand, the newly reopened catering establishments had to build up their stocks.

Vetropack Group were able to respond with high supply capability and additional capacities, especially the glassworks in Moldova which was purchased in November 2020.

In the first half of 2021, Vetropack Group sold 2.89 billion units of glass packaging, 23.0% more than in the previous year (2.35 billion units).

Consolidated net sales from goods and services increased by 23.3% to CHF 399.2 million (last year: CHF 323.8 million).

Corning’s clean water system voted top project by partners

Corning’s Project Clean Water, initiated at the Hickory Manufacturing and Technology Center in North Carolina, was recently named a top project by peer companies who are also members of Energy Star.

Corning was one of nine companies with new projects that save natural resources recognized at the Environmental Protection Agency’s annual industrial partners meeting in Washington, D.C.

Project Clean Water recycles the water used in manufacturing and greatly reduces the amount of water discharged from the Hickory plant to the local municipality’s treatment facility.

To do this, the company installed an ion exchange water treatment system that removes contaminates from the process water, while an ultraviolet lamp controls any biological growth.

Serum Institute of India acquires 50% stake of SCHOTT Kaisha

Serum Institute of India, the world‘s largest vaccine, has bought the 50% stake in the Indian joint venture SCHOTT Kaisha from former co-owners Kairus Dadachanji and Shapoor Mistry.

The joint venture manufactures pharma packaging products such as vials, syringes, ampoules and cartridges used to package life-saving medications.

To support the increasing demand for laminated glass in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Guardian Glass is adding a new jumbo laminated glass production line at its Ryazan, Russia plant.

The investment supports the region’s strong growth in the commercial, residential and interior sectors.

Guardian Glass Russia will offer the region an improved product mix including SunGuard and ClimaGuard coatings on laminated substrates for various applications. Laminated glass production is expected to begin in Spring 2023.

Flat Glass Group expands furnace capacity

The half year results of Flat Glass Group Co. Ltd reported on the expansion of sites in Anhui Province, PRC and Haiphong, Vietnam and the cold repair and reconstruction of the existing furnaces at the Jiaxing Production base.

Two projects with a processing capacity of 750,000 tons of photovoltaic (PV) glass are taking shape at the Anhui Production Base, including four lines each with a daily melting capacity of 1,200 tons.

The first PV glass production line was ignited and put into production in the first quarter of 2021, the second was ignited and put into production in the second quarter, and the other two are expected to be gradually put into production in the third and fourth quarters.

Berlin Packaging acquires Juvasa Group

Berlin Packaging has acquired the Juvasa Group, a group of companies focused on the supply of glass, plastic, and metal packaging for the food and beverage industry, its sixth acquisition in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) during 2021.

Founded in 1987, this family-owned business began when the founder, Juan Valle Santos, needed to source glass jars to market his honey.

Today, the Juvasa Group is led by Jesús Valle Sánchez, the founder’s son, and is a leading supplier of bottles and jars for olive oil, wine, spirits, sauces, vegetable preserves, honey, and more.
