Corning and Hyundai augmented reality head-up displays

Corning Incorporated have introduced a new product category for its Automotive Glass Solutions with the company’s curved mirrors as key components in a new augmented reality head-up display (HUD) system by Hyundai Mobis.

Hyundai Motor debuted the technology in the 2021 IONIQ 5 electric crossover utility vehicle.

Origami creates glass 3D structures

Origami creates glass 3D structures

Researchers at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China have developed a way to create intricate three-dimensional structures out of glass by mimicking the ancient art of origami.

The process allows the team to make complex shapes that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional glass-working methods

The technique involves curing a silica nanoparticle-filled liquid precursor into a polymer composite sheet, which is cut into the desired shape.

The flexible sheet is then manually folded at room temperature into a 3D structure, just as is done with paper in origami.

Once the structure is complete, the material undergoes pyrolysis and sintering to remove the polymer binder and convert the remaining material into glass.

Italian collaboration on hydrogen fuel

Italian collaboration on hydrogen fuel

A working group comprising Snam, RINA, Bormioli Luigi, Bormioli Rocco, STARA GLASS, Università degli Studi di Genova, Stazione Sperimentale del Vetro, IFRF Italia, SGRPRO and RJC SOFT has begun a collaboration aimed at reducing emissions in the glass industry through hydrogen.

The manufacture of glass objects, of which Italy is the second-largest producer in Europe with over 5 million tonnes/year, is energy-intensive and difficult to power with electricity.

To this end, the 'Divina' project (Decarbonisation of the Glass Industry: Hydrogen and New Equipment), co-ordinated by Snam, RINA and Bormioli, aims to reduce emissions in the glass melting stage, which accounts for more than 50% of total energy consumption throughout the production process.

Vitro acquires exclusive rights to sell tempered vacuum insulating units

Vitro acquires exclusive rights to sell tempered vacuum insulating units

Vitro Architectural Glass has reached an agreement with LandGlass and VIG Technologies to sell their tempered vacuum insulating glass (VIG) products in North America.

Vitro will begin offering tempered VIG units in North America beginning in late 2021. The company also plans to install LandVac equipment and begin manufacturing VIG units in its North American facilities as the market for VIG products develops.

The new 8.3mm tempered VIG units consist of two fully tempered lites of glass separated by a non-leaded metal seal and a vacuum space.

The inclusion of fully tempered glass enables the VIG unit to be used globally across indoor and outdoor temperature extremes, which can cause failures in non-tempered VIG units.
