Ardagh Group, including Ardagh Metal Packaging and Ardagh Glass Packaging, has been awarded the prestigious platinum rating, the highest sustainability ranking awarded by EcoVadis. The Platinum rating recognises the group’s responsible and sustainable business practices and underlines the scope and ambition of its sustainability efforts. It is now part of the top 1% of companies recognised with such a platinum EcoVadis rating.

The new rating identifies Ardagh’s performance and transparency across four appraisal themes: labour and human rights, environment, sustainable procurement and ethics. Ardagh’s sustainability efforts have also recently been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

Bucher Emhart Glass and Vertech’ have agreed to cooperate to take data collection and usage in the glass plant to the next level. The cooperation will benefit customers with single point data access to the complete line data from batch to palletizer including all relevant forming parameters collected from and around the IS machine.

Based on the correlated data BEG and Vertech’ will offer applications and solutions that increase efficiency of the glass plant and quality of the containers.

UK glass distributor Pattesons Glass has announced three internal promotions to help continue and drive the business forward as part of the directors’ next five-year plan.

Alex Flett takes the position of Sales Manager. With a wealth of sales experience in the glass industry his new role will be focused on Key accounts, new business development, giving a clear sales strategy as well as mentoring a dedicated team, that he has helped establish over the years. The Sales team consist of specialists in the spirit & beer industries, food, drinks & dairy markets as well as cosmetics and personal care, coupled with corks, caps and closures.

A loan of €30 million has been granted by Banco BPM to Zignago Vetro to finance sustainable growth. Among the company's objectives is the reduction of energy consumption in favour of the use of renewable sources.

The company based in Fossalta di Portogruaro, Venice is a leader in the production of hollow glass containers with eight production plants, both in Italy and abroad. In the Italian market it represents one of the main manufacturers and distributors of glass containers for beverages and food, while internationally it occupies a significant position in the cosmetics and perfumery sectors, and special glasses.

A partnership has been established with Drax to provide Allied Glass with a greener energy solution, hydroelectricity. The glass container manufacturer will source 66 GWh of electricity annually from the power company’s river hydroelectric scheme in Scotland.

The use of hydroelectricity will make a significant difference in the journey to lessen the impact of operations and reduce carbon emissions towards the ambitious 2025 goals detailed within the Allied Glass sustainability report.

Corning has formally opened a new optical fibre manufacturing facility in Mszczonów, Poland, to meet growing demand for high-speed connectivity in the European Union and surrounding regions. The facility, one of the largest optical fibre plants in the European Union, is the latest in a $500 million global programme since 2020 supported by growing demand and strong customer commitments.

The new facility adds approximately 250 employees to the company’s workforce of more than 3,000 in Poland and builds on Corning’s successful 20-year history of manufacturing in the region. The company also manufactures optical cable and connectivity components at its campus in Stryków.

Amid the energy crisis in Europe, Glass Alliance Europe has welcomed the recognition by European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen that ‘targeted support is needed (…) like the glass makers across Europe’ as part of her State of the European Union speech delivered on 14 September.

‘It is encouraging for all actors in the glass sector to hear that, at the highest political level, there is a recognition that the glass industry needs to access energy in a continuous manner and at affordable costs,’ declared Bertrand Cazes, Secretary General of Glass Alliance Europe. ‘Without mechanisms that drastically slash the price of gas, terribly harsh months ahead are to be feared in the glass sector.’
