Swedish Energy Agency grants OC Paroc support for reduced carbon dioxide emissions and increased waste recycling

The Swedish Energy Agency has granted Owens Corning Paroc AB SEK 121.6 million in support of the implementation of a modernization project that involves reduced carbon dioxide emissions and increased recycling of waste at the company's plant for mineral wool production in Hällekis.

Mineral wool is one of the most common insulation materials in buildings and contributes to efficient energy use and to reducing emissions from heating.

Traditionally, the production of mineral wool is energy-intensive and causes carbon dioxide emissions, mainly due to the use of coke as an energy source when melting the minerals.

Biofuel trial by St Helens glass giant marks new world-first towards decarbonisation

Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, part of the NSG Group, has become the world’s first flat glass manufacturer to fire its furnace on 100% biofuel, as part of an industry trial to find sustainable alternatives to natural gas.

A sustainable biofuel made from organic waste materials powered the St Helens glass manufacturer’s furnace entirely for four days, creating 165,000m2 of the lowest carbon float glass ever made.

The fuel emits circa 80% less CO2 than traditional natural gas used in the sector.

The trial forms part of a £7.1 million project led by industry research and technology organisation Glass Futures, working under the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Energy Innovation Programme.
