Creating a foldable glass revolution

A flexible ultra-thin glass for foldable displays and flip phones, Xensation Flex is Schott’s latest glass answer to the needs of the consumer electronics industry. Initially invented as a rigid, high performance cover glass, Xensation Flex proves that strength can also come with the ability to bend. The broad portfolio enables designs that have never been possible before or to offer industry-leading features in set drop performance or strength.

The material is flexible enough to bend around a person’s finger after processing and is now available in mass production. Flexible glass is offered with a bending radius below 2mm and in thicknesses of less than a human hair post-processing. This latest product can be chemically toughened and is a suitable material for flip phones requiring both flexible and strong displays.

We are now supplying ultra-thin glass to Samsung” Dr Feng He, Head of Global Product Management and Application at Schott UTG confirmed. “This means our technology and high volume production capability are in a leading position versus other glass players.

Xensation Flex is based on more than 30 years’ experience in researching and producing a wide variety of UTG, tailor-made for several applications. Schott has refined the core UTG production process known as ‘down draw technology’, where a glass ribbon is pulled down from the top, moving across various rollers and through the cooling track.

Thanks to this eco-friendly technique, glass of a desired thickess is directly drawn from the melt to achieve stable thinness, with no harmful acid etching needed.
