Istanbul Stock Exchange listing success

Sisecam has successfully completed the largest merger ever registered in the Turkish capital markets and earlier this week, the opening bell rang for Sisecam on the Istanbul Stock Exchange.

Speaking after the bell ringing ceremony, Sisecam Vice Chairman and CEO Professor Ahmet Kırman indicated that Sisecam simplified its legal entity and shareholding structure and consolidated all its activities under one entity to further enhance its global competitive position.

He described the merger as a historic milestone in the group’s long-term strategies and competitive goals in global markets

Chief Technical Officer named

Chief Technical Officer named

The Board of Directors at Vetropack Holding Ltd has appointed Dr Guido Stebner as group-wide Chief Technical Officer for the Engineering and Production division from 1 January 2021, succeeding recently retired industry stalwart Günter Lubitz.

He will also become a member of the Management Board.

Dr Stebner studied metallurgy at the Clausthal Zellerfeld University of Technology in Germany.

In 1997, he completed his doctoral thesis on the ‘Design of coated rollers for casting steel according to the twin-roll process’ with distinction at RWTH Aachen University in Germany.

Addressing the cancellation of on-site events, GlassTrend is staging a regular series of TEDx-like webinars for its members this autumn, focusing on the future of the glass industry after the Covid-19 pandemic and before facing the crisis of the global climate change.

With the duration of each webinar planned for approximately 40 minutes, fluent speakers have been invited with a helicopter view on such topics as CO2-free glass production, glass as an enabling material for renewable energy and as a material contributing to a more sustainable world.

Helmut Sorg remembered

A long-serving managing partner of Beteiligungen Sorg GmbH, Helmut Sorg died unexpectedly earlier this year at the age of 80. Mr Sorg was a member of the fourth generation of the family, still at the helm of the family business, working together with his son Alexander and his brother Karl-Heinz.

As a consequence of post war difficulties in East Germany, Helmut left the family home in Breitenbach, Thuringia at the age of 14 and moved to the west to live with his uncle in Speyer.

After graduating from high school, he attended the technical university in Aachen to study industrial furnace and heating technology. He graduated at the age of 24 and began working full-time for Nikolaus SORG in 1964.

French float furnace closure

AGC Glass Europe plans to close one of two float furnaces at its Boussois site in France.

This measure forms part of an overall plan aimed at restoring competitiveness.

The closure will lead to a loss of 90 jobs.

The Boussois management will act in concert with the personnel representatives to consider all the most socially acceptable solutions for putting this plan into practice.

European households embrace glass recycling during lockdown

Research carried out by Ardagh Group shows that 34% of households from over 2100 people surveyed in the UK, Germany and Poland have been recycling more glass packaging during the months of lockdown.

With the closure of bars and restaurants in the initial phase of lockdown, people were consuming more foods and beverages packed in glass at home, leading to an increase in the volume of glass being recycled via the domestic recycling streams.

The actual increase in glass recycling varied by country, with 40% of people in the UK and Poland and 21% of people in Germany indicating that they were recycling more glass.

Net zero webinar programmes confirmed

British Glass has announced the full agenda for its two net zero webinars in October. These online events will provide information on and help to shape strategy as the UK glass industry looks to achieve net zero by 2050.

The first webinar, ‘The net zero outlook’, on 15 October will feature presentations from Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer, Baroness Brown of Cambridge and the Industrial energy team from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

The second session, ‘Net zero in the glass industry’ on 22 October, will feature Antonia Mattos, Principal consultant at Element Energy, Rob Ireson of Glass Futures and David Cast, Climate change director at Pilkington UK.

Updates to the popular architectural resource include recommendations on evaluating colour in glass samples and mock-ups, as well as opportunities to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) credit through glass selections.
