Furnace Solutions Conference 2022 – first speakers announced
The Society of Glass Technology (SGT) has announced the return of the Furnace Solutions conference on 8-9 June 2022.
Having traditionally been staged in Stoke-on-Trent in the UK, this year’s event will take place at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens, overlooking the construction site of Glass Futures’ Global Centre of Excellence.
“We have an exciting conference which will focus on the decarbonisation of the glass industry with papers from glass and gas producers sharing their experience of using alternative fuels”, comment Stuart Hakes, SGT President. “Other presenters will discuss the implication of decarbonisation on investment decisions, refractory selection and emissivity. The SGT has always looked for new presenters and this year is no exception, with first-time presenters from a number of companies such as NSG Pilkington, Encirc, Linde Gas and Emisshield.”
The first speakers to be revealed are Chris Windle of DSF Refractories and Andrew Keighley from NSG Pilkington. Mr Windle will present ‘Hy-ghly durable refractories for hybrid glass melters’, tackling the tackle challenges likely to be faced with hybrid glass melters going forward.
Entitled ‘NSG hydrogen firing at Greengate’, Mr Keighley will offer NSG’s experience in recently firing a float furnace with hydrogen, covering advantages, disadvantages and long-term issues that need to be considered.
He will also potentially discuss NSG’s experience with biofuel firing.

With an online event having been held last year, the last face to face Furnace Solutions Conference was in 2019 (pictured) and was deemed a great success by delegates, speakers, sponsors and the organisers.
Attendees visited from far and wide, including the USA, Israel, Turkey and Western Europe, with over a third representing 15 glass producers.
