SCHOTT hits Covid-19 milestone

Marking a massive contribution to the global fight against Covid-19 the pharmaceutical packaging business unit of SCHOTT, leading producer of pharmaceutical containers made from borosilicate glass, has delivered enough vials to provide more than 1 billion doses of vaccines for the coronavirus.

The vials were delivered to projects around the world with a focus on the USA, Europe and China. Approximately 90% of approved vaccines rely on SCHOTT vials.

The company remains well on track to deliver vials for more than 2 billion vaccine doses through 2021.

June 2021 trade fair cancelled

The glasstec trade fair will not be held as planned due to the sustained pandemic and continued global lockdown measures as well as international travel restrictions.

In close co-ordination with associations and partners, Messe Düsseldorf has decided to cancel the glasstec trade fair, scheduled from 15 to 18 June 2021.

The event had already been postponed from 2020 to 2021. The next glasstec will be held in line with its accustomed scheduling from 20 to 23 September 2022.

USA glass plant acquisition

Stoelzle Glass Group has acquired the Monaca, Pennsylvania glass factory from Anchor Hocking Glass Co, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Oneida Group.

Via this purchase, the diversified Austrian glass packaging group opens its seventh glass plant and its first plant in the USA and first outside Europe.

Villa Poma, Lombardia furnace commissioned

Verallia has commissioned its eleventh production furnace and demonstrated its intention to continue investing in Italy, by strengthening the Villa Poma site.

In 1964, the Mantua plant, not at that time owned by Verallia, initiated the production of glass containers for the beer market.

This was followed in 1991 by the construction of a second furnace, which underwent a major refurbishment two years ago.

Today, on the foundations of the first plant - shut down in 2013 due to age limits - a replacement furnace has been built, featuring cutting-edge production and environmental technologies.

Speciality German glass furnaces company acquired

Germany’s HORN Glass Industries AG is scheduled to acquire the Melting Technology Division of JSJ Jodeit GmbH 1 April 2021.

Since its creation in 1991, JSJ Jodeit has been a successful supplier of technology and equipment for the production of high quality speciality glasses.

Via the knowhow gained, HORN is expanding its competences in the field of electrically heated and gas-oxygen heated melting plants for technical and specialty glasses. At the same time, HORN is preparing for the challenges of the energy transition by providing energy saving and low emission melting technologies.

Employing live video technology, the GlassTrend spring seminar will take place on 24 March. An event exclusively for members, the conference will focus on the application of sustainable technologies in energy-intensive industries.

The reduction of both energy consumption and CO2 footprint, while increasing production efficiency are key challenges for the glass industry, tackling these challenges by developing glass production processes that the use of sustainable fuels, adoption of CO2 lean raw materials, intensify glass recycling and improving energy efficiency of glass furnaces.  The challenge to cut energy consumption and CO2 emissions is not exclusive to the glass industry.
